The popularity of home schooling has grown steadily since it was made legal in 1985.  At least 1,650 students were home-schooled in Clark County last year.  More are educated primarily at home but are enrolled in public school programs that cater to  home-schoolers.  The Battle Ground School District offers Home-Link in Battle Ground and Camas.  The Evergreen School District opened the most recent home-schooling partnership with Home Choice Academy.

The children usually attend a few hours a week to work on subjects that are difficult for their parents to do at home, such as chemistry and higher math, or extracurricular activities such as band.

Washington State does not require that home-schooling families work with public school districts, although parents must file a "Declaration of Intent" each year in the district where they live.  For more information about the rules, call the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction at 360-725-6175 or visit the Washington Home Based Educational Site.
