Youth Sports
Youth sports activities are very important in a child's development.
Here in Clark County children have the opportunity to participate in
many sports. So, regardless if they want to work toward being
in the MBA, MLB or play for the World Soccer Cup or just play to
have fun, they will be able to find a game to play. Some examples:
* There are 18 Little Leagues within the county, providing
opportunities for boys and
girls to play baseball and softball. *
Young swimmers can choose among four USA Swimming-sanctions
competitive
teams. * About 1,000 youths played tackle
football in the county in the fall of 2005; 900 in
Clark County
Youth Football and 100 in first-year Vancouver Pop
Warner league. * The Columbia Youth Soccer Federation
and the East County Youth Soccer
Association field hundreds of
recreational youth teams each fall. For
those interested in competitive soccer and advanced training,
the Columbia Premier
Soccer Club and F.C. Vancouver field teams with
paid coaches that compete in
statewide leagues and regional
tournaments. * HotShots Youth Sport is a private
organization that runs noncompetitive basketball
and indoor soccer
leagues for grade-school children. * Agencies such as the
Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, Camas Parks and
Recreation,
and Evergreen Community Education offer sports camps and leagues for
kids. * The YMCA, private fitness
clubs, and sport-specific clubs such as The Hoop and
Mountain View
Ice Arena offer youth programs. With so many options, finding the
right fit might seem a long shot. But it is not as complicated
as it might appear.
School is a good place to start. Organizations such as
Little League and youth soccer clubs have residential boundaries
that determine where kids play. These generally follow school
boundaries and information about how to register is often available
at school. Private businesses often advertise their programs.
But the search for the right wrestling club or gymnastics school
should be treated like any shopping project. It is a good idea
to study the options by meeting with coaches and talking with
families involved with the clubs. Kim Cederholm, a recreation
specialist with Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, suggests
parents consider several issues when exploring a sports program.
Among them: Is the activity competitive or recreation?
What is the age breakdown? Are the coaches volunteers , and
are they required to pass a Washington State Patrol background
check? Where are practices and games? What is the time
commitment for the children and their parents?
