The Columbia Gorge
The Incredible beauty of the Columbia Gorge will literally take your

Regardless of the season being Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, you will be
able to experience and enjoy the unique beauty of the Columbia
Gorge. Come explore the waterfalls, viewpoints, trails, lush
forests and prime windsurfing spots that make the Gorge one of our
priceless attractions.
The west end of the historic Columbia River Highway, in Bridal Veil,
Oregon , is only 30 minutes from Vancouver, Washington. If you
are looking for a way to spend an afternoon then you might want to
consider exploring the historic winding road. You can hick
through the trails, cool yourself by the waterfalls or just enjoy
the spectacular view.
Beacon Rock State Park: is located in the
Columbia Gorge
natural scenic area on State Route 14 about 35 miles
east of
Vancouver, Washington.
Beacon rock is an 848 foot tall
andesite plug, all
that remains of a volcano eroded away by the
Columbia River.
A 0.75 mile trail to the top, completed
in
1918, leads to
breathtaking views in all directions.
Across the
highway from Beacon Rock is 4,482 acres of forested
uplands with a 1.25 mile nature trail, 9.5 miles of
hiking trails and 13 miles of fire road. Hardy Falls
and Rodney Falls are scenic highlights along the
trail to the summit of 2,445 foot Hamilton Mountain,
which has a spectacular view of
Bonneville Dam and
points east. A new trail has been constructed to
Little Beacon Rock.
On Oct 31,
1805 the
Lewis and Clark Expedition
arrived here and first measured tidal influence on
the river, indicating their long journey was nearing
an end.
Waterfalls: Water features are perhaps
the biggest drea to the gorge. Dozens of waterfalls can be
found, including the most visited waterfallin Oregon:
Multnomah Falls. There are plenty of other stunning
waterfall in the area worth visiting. Most waterfalls can be
accessed bia the Historic Columbia River Highway. Make time on
your outing calendar to visit Bridal Falls, Wahkeena Falls and
Triple Falls. Mosier Twin Tunnels: The Mosier Twin Tunnels were
reopened in July of 2000 and dedicated as the Historic Columbia
River Highway State Trail. The trail is 4.6 miles long, and
open to pedestrians and bicyclists. The view on the east end is
spectacular, opening to vistas of the Columbia River Gorge and
Eighteen Mile Island, also known as "Chicken Island," or "Chicken
Charlie's Island." It is so named because it is located 18 miles
downriver of the Long and Short Narrows of The Dalles, and because
at one time there was a chicken ranch on the island. According to
Mosier resident Willie Gholston, the "Charlie" who once resided on
the island never owned any chickens and was annoyed that people
referred to the place as Chicken Charlie's Island, but despite his
protests the name stuck. The island now is the location of a private
summer home. The rugged landscape of the Columbia River Gorge
posed significant obstacles to the design and construction of the
Historic Columbia River Highway. Here, between Hood River and
Mosier, a right-of-way conflict with the railroad forced engineer
John A. Elliott to locate the road away from the river and to design
tunnels through steep basalt bluffs. The 17-foot-wide Mosier Twin
Tunnels easily accomodated two-way traffic by Model Ts. But as
automobiles became larger, accidents were common - despite widening
to 20 feet. Although signals eventually regulated one-way traffic,
waiting vehicles were vulnerable to falling rock from the bluffs
above. With construction of a water grade thoroughfare in the
1950's, the tunnels were closed and filled. Thanks to the efforts of
Oregon's Senator Mark O. Hatfield, restoration of these famous
tunnels as part of a hiking and bicycling path began in 1995. The
Mosier Twin Tunnels were completed in 1921 after 3 years of
backbreaking labor.
The restoration project was a collaboration of the Historic
Columbia River Highway Advisory Committee, Oregon Department of
Transportation (ODOT) , Oregon State Parks, Oregon Tourism
Commission, and the State Historic Preservation Department.
The Vista House: This beauty is octagonal shaped and
sits majestically above the Columbia River at Crown Point
State Park (about 733 feet up) and offers a commanding view of the
Columbia River Gorge.
