Vancouver Barracks and Officer's Row

A new chapter began in 1849 with the arrival of the US Army and their establishment of the first American military post in the Pacific Northwest, on the high ground above the fort. The troops began their mission of keeping peace and providing protection and support for Oregon Trail immigrants. The Hudson's Bay Company and the Army co-existed fairly harmoniously at first, with the Army even renting space in the Company village while establishing a presence in the area. In 1860, the Hudson's Bay Company abandoned Fort Vancouver and the US Army claimed the area of the old fort and village.

Vancouver Barracks became the headquarters of the Department of the Columbia, which embraced present-day Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. From the 1850s to the 1870s, troops were dispatched to fught the Indian Wars. In the following decades, they saw action in the Philippines, curbed labor riots in Tacoma, and attempted to keep order during the Alaska Gold Rush and strikes at Idaho mines. During World War I, the world's largest spruce mill was constructed over the site of the earlier Fort Vancouver. Lumber from across the Pacific Northwest was milled for biplane manufacture. In the 1930s, the regional training facility for the Civilian Conservation Corps was housed at Vancouver Barracks, under the command of George C. Marshall. Many other officers who later gained fame (or a presidency) were stationed at Vancouver early in their careers, including Sheridan, McClelland, Howard, and Ulysses S. Grant.

Today portions of Vancouver Barracks are home to the 104th and 396th divisions of the US Army Reserve, continuing a rich tradition of military service.

The National Park Service interprets Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and Vancouver Barracks' richly diverse history through ranger-led talks and walks, as well as through living history programs, special events, and multi-media programs, including films and written informational materials. The National Park Service's mission is to bring this special place to life by sharing the story of the Fort and the US Army's emergence and growth on the site, through interpretive, educational, and scientific programs.

Officers Row consists of 21 houses located in a long row facing the Fort Vancouver Parade Grounds. The small area, which includes Officers Row, the old Fort Vancouver, and the old Barracks Parade Grounds was once the hub of northwest history. The houses were designed for either company or field grade officers. High ceilings, large foyers, long sweeping staircases, bay windows, numerous fireplaces, and many rooms are characteristics of most of the houses. The oldest house, named after President Ulysses S. Grant who worked in the house, is one of the foremost historical structures in the Old Oregon country.  (picture is the home of President Grant)

The public is encouraged to visit the houses and to tour the entire barracks. Some of the homes are open to the public, offering gifts, tours, lectures, and dining opportunities.
